From our comfortable base at Soga de Oro Lodge, you will paddle traditional balsa rafts on Machuwasi Oxbow Lake to observe prehistoric Hoatzin birds, capybaras, and caimans, followed by a dawn spectacle at a vibrant mineral parrot clay lick.
Many travelers believe experiencing the Amazon requires weeks of overland trekking. Manu’s unique topography makes it possible to descend from alpine mountain passes at 4,000 meters into lush tropical rainforest within a single day.
This 3-day adventure is carefully coordinated to maximize wildlife encounters while eliminating downtime. You will travel in private vehicles with experienced jungle chauffeurs, transition smoothly to motorized wooden river canoes, and stay in lodges with private en-suite bathrooms and hot showers.
Led by an English-speaking local naturalist guide born and raised in the Manu region, you will learn to read the signs of the forest—distinguishing monkey alarm calls, recognizing medicinal sap, and spotting camouflaged nocturnal reptiles on thrilling evening walks.

We depart Cusco at 05:00 AM in our private overland vehicle. Our first stop is at the fascinating pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca, followed by a brief walk through the colonial folklore capital of Paucartambo.
Crossing the high pass of Acjanaco (3,800m), we officially enter the biosphere of Manu National Park. Here we begin our descent through the spectacular cloud forest zone. Moss, giant ferns, and hanging orchids envelop the mountain slopes.
Mid-afternoon, we visit a secluded observation platform near San Pedro to witness the courtship displays of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana). Along the road we frequently spot woolly monkeys, quetzals, and toucanets. By late afternoon, we arrive in the warm valley town of Pilcopata. Dinner and overnight at Pilcopata Inn Lodge (private bathroom, hot water).
Following breakfast, we take a 45-minute drive to the port of Atalaya, visiting a regional orchid conservation project along the way. At the port, we board our motorized riverboat and begin navigating down the rushing waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River.
During the river cruise, watch gravel beaches and riverbanks for fasciated tiger herons, kingfishers, side-necked turtles, and sunbathing capybaras. We arrive at Soga de Oro Lodge, settle into our private rooms, and enjoy a freshly prepared Amazonian lunch.
In the afternoon, a short trail hike leads us to Machuwasi Lake. We board traditional wooden balsa rafts to quietly navigate this mirror-like oxbow lagoon. Machuwasi is a haven for the prehistoric Hoatzin (a bizarre leaf-eating bird with claws on its wings), horned screamers, and squirrel monkeys. At dusk, we embark on an evening walk along forest trails to look for caimans, tarantulas, and tree frogs. Overnight at Soga de Oro Lodge.
At 05:30 AM, we take a short 10-minute boat ride to an active parrot clay lick along the riverbank. From our boat, we observe hundreds of green parakeets, blue-headed parrots, and chestnut-fronted macaws gathering on the clay cliff to ingest essential minerals that neutralize dietary toxins.
We return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before boarding our boat back upstream to Atalaya Port. There, our private ground transport awaits to drive us back through the cloud forest and over the Andes. We arrive in Cusco around 06:30 PM, with direct drop-off at your hotel.

Luggage Advice: Large suitcases should be stored at your hotel in Cusco (all hotels provide free secure luggage storage). Bring a medium backpack (35-45L) with clothes and essentials for 3 days.
Health & Vaccinations: Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for the Amazon basin. Malaria risk in the Cultural Zone is very low, but standard precautions against mosquito bites (DEET, long sleeves) are advised.
Climate: Day temperatures range between 24°C and 30°C with high humidity. Nights are pleasant (18°C – 20°C). Occasional southern cold fronts (‘friajes’) can drop temperatures to 14°C, so bring one warm fleece.
