You will learn ancestral survival skills—practicing traditional archery with handcrafted wild bamboo bows, identifying medicinal forest plants that have cured tropical ailments for millennia, and learning ancient textile weaving techniques.
The journey also includes classic Manu highlights: crossing the Andean cloud forest to observe the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, navigating the Alto Madre de Dios River, exploring the wildlife of Machuwasi Oxbow Lake on wooden balsa rafts, and tracking nocturnal creatures on guided night safaris.

Pickup at 05:00 AM from your Cusco hotel. We drive east through the Andes, stopping first at the pre-Inca Lupaca tombs of Ninamarca and the folkloric colonial town of Paucartambo.
Ascending to Acjanaco Pass (3,800m), we enter the cloud forest of Manu. At our private San Pedro hide, we observe the theatrical courtship dance of Peru’s national bird, the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, alongside quetzals and tanagers. By late afternoon, we arrive in Pilcopata. Dinner and overnight at Pilcopata Inn Lodge.
After breakfast, a short drive brings us into the territory of the Santa Rosa de Huacaria Native Community, home to two indigenous linguistic groups: the Matsigenka and the Huachipaeri.
We are received by community leaders in the communal lodge. Throughout the morning, community members guide us through their traditional agricultural plots (chacras) and secondary forest trails, demonstrating the cultivation of yuca, plantains, achiote, and wild cacao.
Learn the secrets of Amazonian ethnobotany: plants used as natural pain relievers, disinfectants, and natural fish repellents. We participate in an interactive session on traditional bamboo bow-and-arrow craft, testing our aim at forest targets. After sharing an Amazonian lunch prepared with fresh community ingredients, we listen to oral histories and legends recounted by village elders. Overnight in comfortable community guest accommodations or nearby forest lodge.
After breakfast, we bid farewell to our indigenous hosts and travel to Atalaya Port. We board our motorized wooden canoe and travel down the sparkling waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River, scanning for river turtles, herons, and basking caimans.
We arrive at Soga de Oro Lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, a short trail walk leads to Machuwasi Lake, where we board stable wooden balsa rafts. Glide soundlessly across the water while observing hoatzins, horned screamers, and squirrel monkeys in the shoreline palms.
After a delicious dinner, an exciting night walk reveals nocturnal tree frogs, glowing click beetles, and tarantulas. Overnight at Soga de Oro Lodge.
At 05:30 AM, a short boat ride takes us to the local river cliff parrot clay lick. Watch dozens of green parakeets, blue-headed parrots, and chestnut-fronted macaws feed along the mineral face.
We return for breakfast, then take our boat back to Atalaya Port. Our private vehicle meets us for the scenic drive up through the cloud forest, arriving in Cusco around 06:30 PM.
