Entering past the Limonal Ranger Station, human activity ceases entirely. For days, the only highway is the meandering Manu River, flanked by pristine sandbanks where Black Caimans, capybaras, and side-necked turtles sunbathe—and where fortunate travelers frequently spot the elusive Jaguar (Panthera onca) resting along the riverbanks.
Deep inside the reserve, you stay at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge—an indigenous-owned eco-lodge—and navigate the magical waters of Cocha Salvador by silent catamaran to observe resident families of endangered Giant River Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis).

Departing Cusco at 05:00 AM, our private van travels through the historic Andean valley of Paucartambo, stopping to examine the pre-Inca stone burial towers of Ninamarca.
We cross Acjanaco Pass (3,800m) into the mist-veiled cloud forest of Manu National Park. In the afternoon, we stop in San Pedro to observe the vibrant courtship display of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock from our private hide. Along the roadside, we look for quetzals and woolly monkeys. Arrive in Pilcopata by evening. Dinner and overnight at Pilcopata Inn / Bambu Lodge.
After breakfast, we drive to Atalaya Port and board our covered motorized riverboat. We cruise down the Alto Madre de Dios River, observing waterbirds, kingfishers, and basking capybaras.
In the afternoon, we arrive at the frontier settlement of Boca Manu, the meeting point of the Alto Madre de Dios and Manu rivers. We check into Hummingbird Lodge, explore nearby trails, and conduct an evening spotlight walk for nocturnal amphibians. Overnight in Boca Manu.
We depart at 05:00 AM, turning onto the pristine waters of the Manu River. At Limonal Ranger Station, our official national park permits are checked. From this point onward, we enter the strictly protected Reserved Zone.
The 6-hour boat ride up the Manu River is one of the most thrilling wildlife safaris on Earth. With no human habitation along the banks, wildlife is extraordinarily visible: massive Black Caimans and side-necked turtles sunbathe on white sandbars; families of capybaras graze the water’s edge; and herds of peccaries cross the river.
This stretch offers our strongest chance to spot a wild Jaguar resting on the sunny riverbanks. By late afternoon, we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, a rustic, clean eco-lodge managed by native Matsigenka families. Dinner and overnight at Casa Matsiguenka.
We wake before dawn to the haunting roar of red howler monkeys. We take a short trail to Cocha Salvador, one of Manu’s largest and most pristine oxbow lakes.
Boarding a quiet wooden catamaran, we silently row the mist-covered waters. Here lives a resident family of endangered Giant River Otters (Pteronura brasiliensis). Watch them hunt fish, communicate with loud vocalizations, and play along fallen logs. We also observe black caimans, prehistoric hoatzins, and agility monkeys in the shoreline canopy.
After lunch at the lodge, we hike to Cocha Otorongo and climb the 30-meter Observation Tower. From this elevated platform, enjoy panoramic views across the lake and upper forest canopy, scanning for macaws, toucans, and spider monkeys. Return to Casa Matsiguenka for dinner and night walk.
We begin an early morning boat trip back down the Manu River. The early hours provide a second prime opportunity for spotting jaguars, tapirs, and ocelots along the river beaches.
Exiting the park at Limonal, we continue into the Madre de Dios River down to Maquisapayoj Lodge. Settle into private rooms, explore nearby trails, and prepare for our evening mammal observation. Overnight at Maquisapayoj Lodge.
At 05:15 AM, we travel by boat to the camouflaged viewing blind at the famous Blanquillo Macaw Clay Lick. Enjoy a breathtaking spectacle as hundreds of green parakeets and brilliant Red-and-Green Macaws descend onto the mineral-rich clay cliffs.
In the afternoon, we hike through towering primary forest to the Tapir Clay Lick Observation Platform. Equipped with mosquito netting and comfortable mattresses, we wait quietly at dusk to observe the elusive Lowland Tapir as it emerges from the deep forest to lick mineral salt. Overnight at Maquisapayoj Lodge or the tapir platform.
Following breakfast, we take our boat downstream to Colorado Port, cross to Puerto Carlos, and join the paved Transoceanic Highway in our private vehicle. We climb from the Amazon basin back over the Andes, arriving in Cusco around 07:00 PM.
Note: Travelers connecting to Lima can be transferred directly to Puerto Maldonado Airport (PEM) for afternoon flights.
